Themes

The central theme of OW2con this year is: "The current challenges of open source". As open source is becoming mainstream and reaching industry maturity, new challenges are appearing today for open source communities, projects and companies:
The first concerns free riders. How can we get organisations like integrators and users to understand it is in their own long-term interests to contribute back to projects?
The second is uncontrolled re-use, which must be professionalised. We need tools and best practices to manage endless dependencies and properly assess open source projects.
The third challenge is SaaS. How critical will our four foundational freedoms going to be if they do not suffice to define openness, should open source licenses adapt?
The fourth challenge is verticalisation. With open source everywhere, how are we going to fare as we move out of our comfort zone of horizontal components, tools and application platforms?
The fifth and final (for now) challenge is the damage that can be caused by opportunistic foundations leveraging the mechanics of open source only to develop technologies and market positions.
OW2con'20 participants and speakers will share their views and experiences around this theme, and discuss about the future of open source.

At OW2con, we look for talks that improve the technical skills of open source professionals, strike their imaginations and motivate them to excel professionally. The OW2 annual conference is appreciated for its short, focused and cutting-edge sessions. Please submit a presentation that fits in one or more of the following broad themes.

  • AI

Artificial Intelligence is quickly propagating in the software industry and is coming soon to a variety of devices and technologies that we are all using every day. In this theme, we are looking for computing platforms focusing on machine learning, reasoning, natural language processing, speech recognition, vision, etc.

  • Application Platforms

We look for presentations on generic components and application platforms for enterprise information systems spanning from middleware to application framework through big data, business intelligence, BPM, CMS, PLM, Wikis, illustrating open source going mainstream.

  • Big Data and BI

Today BI systems enable to integrate advanced analytics for big data. Advanced analytics and BI can be highly complementary; advanced analytics can provide a deep, exploratory perspective on the data, while BI systems provide a more structured user experience. We are expecting to discover the best of recent innovations in open source BI area.

  • Blockchain

Blockchains will profoundly disrupt dozens of industries including banking, finance, insurance,  amongst many others. It opens large opportunities to open source developers. This theme will welcome presentations around the latest trends and applications among blockchains.

  • Dependency Management
  • Infrastructure Automation

Infrastructure automation tools and methods that save time and reduce risk of human error in root tasks, IT configuration, patch management and performance tracking.

  • IoT

The broad IoT space is moving toward a platform model that encompasses a number of functional layers providing connectivity, security, data management and application enablement on top of hardware-specific interfaces.

  • NLP (Natural Language Processing)
  • OSS Challenges
  • OSS Governance
  • OSS Market Readiness
  • OSS in Big Cities

We seek presentations on open source solutions and best practices for big cities. Global cities may be determined by different regulations and organizations but their expectations are similar. They are submitted to the pressure of proprietary vendors and all look at improving their OSS strategies.

  • Privacy & Security

Open source software and OW2 have a role to play in this sector. This theme welcomes presentations that demonstrate technologies, projects and best practices that can help position and build the OW2 Privacy and Security Initiative

  • Software quality and testing

Aligned with the OW2 Quality Program "Oscar" (Open-Source Software Capability Assessment Radar), this theme aims at highlighting projects and initiatives that help improve open source software quality and market readiness.
